Influencer Q&A: Larry Luk

Meet the designer, branding extraordinaire, and self-professed sneakerhead whose work—seen everywhere from Ponce City Market to the cover of Atlanta Magazine—is taking A-town by storm.

Q: Tell us a bit about yourself and how you got started.

A: I’m a designer based here in Atlanta. I’ve done branding, strategy, and marketing for global brands and local ones, too. I love to make things that have high visibility. I’m a huge Atlanta sports fan and an avid sneaker collector. A lot of the stuff I create in my free time is sneaker and sports-adjacent art. You can see more of the work I like to do at larrylukdesign.com.

I started my Twitter account sometime around 2006 when my friend, Vik, put me on. In the early days, I used to use it just to tweet that I was about to go to El Bar. Not really groundbreaking stuff. But over the years I’ve loved using Twitter to follow and participate in a larger conversation around sports and live cultural moments.

With Instagram, I just post things that interest me: sports, sneakers, travel, art, and things that feel like Atlanta to me. I use IG Stories more on a day-to-day basis. I love me some memes.

What are three fun facts about you?

1) I love Kauai and want to get to a place in my life where I can spend months at a time there.

2) My favorite movie is a 15-minute long documentary from 1986 called Heavy Metal Parking Lot. It has probably shaped a lot of who I am and why I don’t like being told what to do.

3) I love hand-modeling. Some of my work can be seen in past Ponce City Market campaigns. You can see them at @larryholdingstuff on Instagram.

Q: What are a few of your favorite brands?

I love painter/illustrator, Matthew Evans. His experiments with color and brush are always inspiring. I love fashion designer, Megan Huntz.

Her store in the Virginia Highlands is a great extension of her point of view for making clothing for every woman. I can’t wait to eat at Marcel once this is all over. It is such a fun restaurant. I could sit there for hours.

I’m constantly inspired by the illustrative brand work coming from Sasso & Co. and the animation work and timely themes coming from OK Motion Club (Amanda Schrebeck & Linda McNeil).

Finally, I’d be remiss not to mention the design work of Farbod Kokabi and the beautiful album cover artwork he creates for the record label Geographic North.

Q: What have been some of the most fun and inspiring projects/collaborations you have worked on?

A: I’m very thankful for my friend, Farshad Arshid, who has constantly trusted me with branding work for his many businesses over the years: Standard, Ponce Denim Company, Peachtree Pint, etc. There’s a lot of trust he has in me and we have a solid working relationship founded on open communication. Also, it was an honor to develop a logo for Station Soccer, a program by Soccer in the Streets to place pitches at MARTA stations throughout our city. Knowing that logo will exist throughout Atlanta beyond my lifetime is a thrill.

A: We love the Atlanta Magazine cover you were featured on. What was that collaborative project like?

The shoot was super fun. The Atlanta Magazine and Tropico photo teams asked me to show up at a certain time with a duffle bag of my favorite clothes. Michelle (Tropico Photo) and Caroline (Atlanta Magazine) picked a few things for me to try on, and I basically just hung out and gave some feedback on what shots I liked and didn’t like, but ultimately, the creative direction was already established by the Atlanta Magazine and Tropico Photo teams. Thanks again to Matt, Caroline, Khoa, Michelle, Forrest, and Nick for making that an unforgettable day.
